Participants will learn how to implement meaningful knowledge of language structure, function, and cognition of the five major components of the reading process. These components include: phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency instruction, vocabulary instruction, and comprehension instruction. Participants will be able to develop a portfolio of formal and informal assessments, interpret and analyze the data, demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics, administration, and interpretation of both quantitative and qualitative instructional assessment, and utilize assessment information for appropriate instruction. It is highly recommended that you have taken Competencies 1 and 2 before taking Competency 3. No remediation by facilitators will be available.

This training will provide teachers and administrators with knowledge and skills to identify the needs of students with differing profiles and use this knowledge for instructional decision making to meet the needs of all students. Participants will gain an understanding of how to prescribe, differentiate instruction, and utilize appropriate strategies and materials from scientifically-based reading research in order to address prevention, identification, and remediation. One of five components for reading endorsement (K-12), this offers understanding of how to use scientifically based research to address the prevention, identification, and remediation of reading difficulties to increase performance. It is a practicum that requires three videos that gives teachers the opportunity to demonstrate effective instruction. Prerequisites for Comp 5 include the satisfactory completion of Competencies 1, 2, 3, and 4. Prerequisites do not need to have been taken through the Schultz Center.

Participants will acquire a greater understanding of the structure of English from a modern day linguistic perspective and will analyze the structure of English in contrast with the languages of target populations in a given class.
